Here is a great opportunity to support the Southern Maine Team Sailors and SailMaine and have some great Flatbread Pizza.

Here is the connection, The MWS Team Sailors are just two too few to form a team of their own, so along with other high schools that are in the same boat (sorry), they have banded together as the Southern Maine Team. Flatbreads of Portland, is willing to split the proceeds of all the patrons on Tues, Oct 13th, 5-9 pm with SailMaine and our Southern Maine Team.

We will look forward to seeing you there, enjoying your company, sharing some sea stories, not to mention those delicious Flatbreads, and thanks for supporting our Sailors!

Team Sailors Race

I have (now) entered all of the upcoming regattas in the Racing Calendar, although some are still TBA.

Saturday Sept. 12th the team sailors competed (Team 1) at SailMaine {placed 9 out of 18} and (Team 2) all the way over in Burlington VT {No results Yet}. Next Saturday Sept 19 both teams will have a chance to do more racing, this time team 1 travels to Gouchester MA while team 2 has the home harbor advantage.

First Week of Sailing

This week gave us the best weather of the summer, in my opinion, and a good wind made the sailing perfect.

It turns out that the end times for sailing are different for Intramural Sailors (IS) at 6:30, and the Team Sailors (TS) at 6:00.

Thanks to all of the drivers this week! One universal question from the sailors has been “Do you have anything to Eat?” , so send snacks with your sailors.

Next week we will only have one day of sailing: the Team on TUESDAY and our Intramural Sailors on WEDNESDAY.

We meet the Team Sailors Coach, Jenny Lawson and the assistant coaches, Andy and Kate.

The Intramural Sailors have Kyle for their coach and I am not sure of any assistants.

Clothes and stuff to bring sailing

Something to eat (a lot of calories get burned up out on the water and sailing goes until 6:30).

A change of (dry) clothes.

Rain gear is often a good idea, and even on sunny days with lots of wind, you may see some spray.

Comfortable shoes with good grip and a heel strap (not flip flops). We prefer closed-toed shoes like old sneakers, watershoes or boating boots.

As the whether gets cooler, woolen or fleece tight fitting gloves or sailing gloves will be needed.

Water Bottle, sunglasses and a hat are good ideas, sunblock.

Lifejackets (PFDs) if you have your own. PFDs are required for all SailMaine programs; SailMaine will provide PFDs if you do not have your own.

As the weather gets colder a woolen hat will be necessary.

Sailing Begins Aug 31st

Sailing begins the week of Aug 31st (before the first day of School) and it would be really great to get to these sessions to start sailing.

As far as carpooling, please call me or others that you know are in the same boat (sorry). If we call each other to try to make arrangements, that would be great. Please do what you can in cooperating in-on car pooling. We’ll get more organized about this soon, so we can count on each other.

Sailing at MWHS

Fall 2009 starts the second year of sailing. Our program is though SailMaine and their High School Team (and Intramural) Sailing programs.

SailMaine offers an after school program of sailing, three days a week from 3:30 to 6:00
There are two sections that students can join:

“Intramural” sailing for new sailors who either don’t want to race or have less (or no) small boat experience, this is a lean to sail or become more confident program: MON, WED, THURS (3:30-6:30). (So far we have 4 students interested, and they would be joining other High schoolers form other Portland area schools)
Southern ME (conglomerate) team (S.ME) for sailors with dingy sailing experience who want to try racing, and this team has a weekend schedule of Saturday races: TUES, THURS, FRI (3:30-6:30) There will be two days of preseason sailing for the S.ME team: THURS and FRI Aug. 27, 28th (call sailMaine to join the pre-season), Also the Team racers will be racing on Saturdays, and once or twice they may be traveling to a Regatta (not held in Portland). (So far we have 3 students sighned up and 2 more interested, and they would be joining other High schoolers form other Portland area schools)

Forms (two short ones) are due on August 31,

The fee is $500 for the semester.

A Payment Plan is available—the first payment ($250) is due on the
31rd; the second payment ($250) is due in Oct.
There is a late fee of $25, but this is waved for new sailors.

The regular season all begins on Monday, August 31st and it goes through October.

I know that this start date is before school starts, but if you can start sailing now, you will get more sailing in during our short season.
